Reading Value Area Migration Across Hong Kong Sessions
How to track when the value area drifts higher or lower overnight and what that shift implies for the next morning’s opening auction.
When the overnight value area climbs while volume thins at the prior point of control, the morning open often tests whether that migration was accepted or merely a thin probe.
Start by marking yesterday’s high-volume node and today’s developing value. If price opens above the prior value area and holds with expanding volume at the new highs, the migration is more likely accepted. If volume fades immediately and price rotates back into yesterday’s range, treat the overnight move as unfinished business.
In the Hong Kong cash session, lunch-hour balance often compresses the profile. Watch whether the afternoon rebuilds volume at the morning POC or whether a second distribution forms. Dual distributions after lunch frequently mark a change in the day’s narrative.
Keep a short log: prior VA high, prior VA low, overnight POC, and the first thirty minutes of volume. Over a few weeks the pattern of acceptance versus rejection becomes clearer than any single rule of thumb.
